Chapter Summaries

  1. Act 1: The play begins with the chorus, who introduce the setting and the characters. The city of Thebes is in ruins after a civil war between two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices. Eteocles has died defending the city, while Polyneices has died trying to take it over. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, has decreed that Eteocles will be honored with a proper burial, but Polyneices will be left to rot. Antigone, the sister of Eteocles and Polyneices, defies this decree and goes to bury her brother herself.
  2. Act 2: Creon discovers that Antigone has disobeyed his orders and orders that she be arrested. He tries to reason with her, but she refuses to back down. She argues that it is her duty to honor her brother and that the laws of the state should not override personal morality.
  3. Act 3: Creon’s son Haemon, who is engaged to Antigone, pleads with his father to release her. Creon refuses, and Haemon leaves in anger. Meanwhile, the blind prophet Teiresias warns Creon that he is making a mistake by not honoring Polyneices. Creon refuses to listen and orders that Antigone be walled up in a tomb, alive.
  4. Act 4: Antigone, feeling hopeless, kills herself in the tomb. When Creon discovers what has happened, he realizes the error of his ways and is overcome with grief. He orders that Antigone be brought out of the tomb and given a proper burial, but it is too late. The play ends with the chorus lamenting the tragic events that have occurred.

Conclusion

Antigone is a powerful and thought-provoking play that explores the tension between individual morality and societal laws. Through the character of Antigone, the play suggests that it is sometimes necessary to defy the laws of the state in order to uphold one’s own sense of right and wrong. At the same time, the play also shows the tragic consequences that can result from such defiance. Overall, Antigone is a timeless work of literature that continues to resonate with readers today.
